The Foodstuffs, Chemicals & Cosmetics Directorate was established by virtue of Legal Notice 213 of 2000 (Schedule 2) as one of 5 functionally independent Directorates within the MSA. Its main function is to act in an advisory capacity towards Government, competent authorities and commercial operators.

The main functions and responsibilities of the Directorate are:

  • Exercising the advisory capacity assigned to the Authority under the Product Safety Act & the Food, Drugs and Drinking Water Act.
  • Advising the Minister, competent authorities and the private sector regarding pertinent legislation.
    To co-ordinate and implement the Authority's programme of standardization in the areas within its remit.
  • To act as the focal point for any notification requirements in the areas indicated
  • To represent the Authority in relevant national and international activities
  • To formulate and give effect to programmes of technical advice and information aimed at industry, commercial operators & consumers.
  • To establish and co-ordinate Technical Committees (Expert Groups) to provide scientific advice
