Ing Francis Farraugia is a Senior Lecturer in Quality Engineering with
Department of Manufacturing Engineering Department, University of Malta.
Ing. Farrugia was head of the Department between 1993 2001, he
is also the Director of the Academic Audit Unit. He studied at the Malta
College of Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino from where he
obtained a post-graduate diploma in Machine Construction, and at the University
of Birmingham from where he obtained an M.Sc (Eng) in Integrated Manufacturing
Systems.
In
1990, Ing. Farrugia founded the Malta Quality Group and was its Chairman
between 1991 to 1996. Since 1992, Ing. Farrugia was responsible for helping
over 80 local companies to obtain ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 certification
and has been invited to run ISO 9000 and TQM seminars in Athens, Greece
and Libya on a number of occasions.
In 1993, Ing. Farrugia was appointed coordinator of the working group:
"Quality for I.T. products and processes" with the National
Strategy for Information Technology. Ing. Farrugia is a qualified EFQM
model assessor and also one of the assessors in the People Management
and People Satisfaction" award run by Employment and Training Corporation.
In
1994, Ing. Farrugia formed part of an EU Task Force set up to prepare
guidelines for a self-assessment scheme based on the European Quality
Model, to be used by the Education Sector.
Between 1993 and 1996 he was member of the Malta Board of Standards. He
was also Universitys representative on the Board of Assessors for
Merit Award Scheme (Government - MAM Agreement 1993), member of the Advisory
Board of the Cleaner Technology Centre (1994) and an advisor with the
Young Enterprise scheme.
Ing.
Farrugia has published over 50 technical articles in journals, magazines,
daily and weekly papers etc. The Open University (UK) appointed him M.Sc
supervisor for local candidates; he participated as speaker in over 20
conferences and seminars both locally and abroad. Ing. Farrugia is a member
of the IEE (UK), IQA (UK) and ASQ (USA).
